Editor Tools ​

The comment box comes with a set of formatting tools. You choose which of them your commenters get from the Comnto dashboard: open your site’s settings and pick the Editor tab.

These controls live in the dashboard only. There is no data-* attribute and no window.comnto() option for them — see No embed equivalent.

Formatting tools ​

The Formatting tools card lists eight checkboxes:

Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, Spoiler, Inline code, Code block, Link

A checked box means commenters have that tool. Everything is checked for a new site, so uncheck only what you want to take away. The tools are available on every plan.

When you uncheck a tool:

  • Its button disappears from the comment box.
  • Its keyboard shortcut stops working, and so does the markdown-style shortcut that produces it: **bold** or __bold__, *italic* or _italic_, ~~strikethrough~~, ==spoiler==, `inline code`, and ``` or ~~~ at the start of a line for a code block. Underline and Link have no markdown-style shortcut.
  • Pasted content loses that kind of formatting. The text survives, the formatting does not.
  • Link has no keyboard shortcut of its own. Unchecking it also means pasted URLs stay plain text and typed URLs no longer turn into links.

The rule applies when a comment is saved, not only while it is being written: anything posted or edited after you uncheck a tool is stored without that formatting — the text is kept, the formatting is removed. Commenters see no error.

Existing comments keep the formatting they already have, unless someone edits them.

Images and mentions ​

The Images and mentions card sets how many of each one comment may carry. At 0, shown as Off, the feature is gone:

  • Images per comment – at 0 the image button leaves the comment box, and neither drag-and-drop nor pasting an image adds one.
  • Mentions per comment – at 0 typing @ suggests nobody, and the widget stops requesting your site’s user list.

The available range comes from your plan.

No embed equivalent ​

There is no data-editor-* attribute and no matching window.comnto() option for any of these settings. Unlike theme or locale, they are applied when a comment is saved rather than in the browser, so an embed cannot override them.

Set them once in the dashboard and every page that embeds the site follows.
